Foods For Lower Blood Pressure

>> Thursday, December 11, 2008

If my title encourages you to expect a menu of specific foods that will lower your blood pressure I apologize for misleading you. Many people believe that certain foods or drinks have this ability. Some people, in fact, swear by miraculous cures from eating this or that, often an unusual item that is not part of our normal diet (otherwise we'd all be cured!).

Just a few of these foods, and some drinks, include celery root, garlic, chocolate, grapeseed, apple cider vinegar and beetroot juice. Some of these are also found as supplements and if you include this category you can add Hawthorne berry, magnesium, potassium, calcium, fish oil, Coenzyme Q10, and many others.

Some of these substances do have a certain amount of clinical credibility. Chocolate, garlic and beetroot juice, just to name a few, have recently made the news after studies indicating their effectiveness. But isn't it odd how they always seem to slip out of view after their 15 minutes of fame, so to speak? If they were really so effective wouldn't you expect more news along with a whole raft of successful products? Wouldn't a garlic-choco-beet smoothie go down great if it could relieve high blood pressure?

When you read beyond the headlines of these studies you will often see that the effects were minor (often just barely statistically significant) of short duration, or the method is totally impractical for regular use. In many cases, a small number of people get big results and the rest nothing. Any of these outcomes, however, is enough to generate a lot of quick publicity.

Blood pressure reductions and other health benefits derived from specific foods are often due to a deficiency in the consumer. Potassium, for example, has recently been shown to reduce blood pressure in some people. But in almost every case it's because the person had a potassium deficiency, a condition known to cause high blood pressure. Anyone eating a halfway healthy diet including fruit - especially bananas - vegetables and dairy products is unlikely to be potassium deficient. This is why some blood pressure remedies work for some people, while most don't for most people.

So is consuming these items a complete waste of effort? Not necessarily. Many of these foods are good nutrition and can be part of a varied, balanced diet. There's also a chance that one or the other may benefit your blood pressure, maybe even in a cumulative way. A cup of hot cocoa, for instance, gives you a whole soup of potential hypertension relievers including chocolate (get a gourmet type high in cocoa content, preferably dark), calcium and potassium.

Hot cocoa is also enjoyable and it can help you sleep. But there's not much point in consuming unusual foods only for their alleged health benefit. Neither is there any need for expensive supplements. None of these things is a dependable high blood pressure remedy, much less a miracle cure.

But there's another, better, way to look at foods to lower blood pressure and that's as part of a complete diet. Your overall diet surely has a much greater influence on your blood pressure - and your health in general - than any single food you may consume. What's more, a healthy and balanced diet also eliminates the need for most, if not all, supplements.

If you've suffered high blood pressure for any length of time you've surely heard of the DASH diet (acronym for the awkward "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension"). The DASH diet is basically sound nutrition recommending a daily consumption of around 30% fat, 20% protein and 50% carbohydrates.

DASH guidelines detail the relative importance of different food types but probably the most important dietary principle of all can be stated in one sentence; avoid processed foods and eat a varied, balanced diet of natural, whole foods. Processed foods to avoid include not only the obvious snacks and junk foods but also low-fat and low-sodium formulations wrongly promoted as health foods. Worst of all are processed "substitutes" for natural and wholesome foods such as eggs, meat and dairy products.

We all know that natural foods usually contain more nutrients and fiber than processed. But the biggest problem with processed foods from a blood pressure perspective is that they tend to be high in salt and low in other minerals. Salt itself is not the culprit it's made out to be but the mineral imbalance in processed foods is a prescription for high blood pressure.

Natural, whole foods tend to be balanced in minerals and other nutrients. Eating a varied diet including all the food groups further helps to ensure a good balance of nutrients. Following this single principle will do more for good health and lower blood pressure in the long run than any amount of "miracle" foods or supplements.

Revealed: The Shocking Truth About Diabetes!

>> Sunday, December 7, 2008

“The People” have had enough apparently!

The “World of Medicine” is scamming people – and even worse: with the help of “law-makers!”
It seems that “money” (as usual) has blinded doctors and medical practitioners to the degree that they are now willingly *suppressing* the truth regarding diabetes – its control and even its cure!

That’s right: I said it ... “cure!”

And this should shock you even more:
It seems that it’s against the law to say the word “cure” when describing anything that actually cures you.

Yet it’s very much okay to say that something “treats” or helps “offset” the symptoms of some health condition or disease.

But if you say “cure” (and this even includes when you in fact have a real and bona fide cure for something and can even prove it!) you can get arrested.
Ever wonder why no one ever talks about “curing diabetes”? Everyone seems to be content with finding ways to “control diabetes” or “live with diabetes”. And for good reason.

No one’s out to “cure” anyone because there’s little money in doing so.
Instead, keeping you sick and marginally pain-free is all anyone’s really out to do for you these days – as doing so means you being “forced” to buy all the same drugs over and over again, and again, and ... (you get the point!)

Of course, if a cure came along it would mean you buy it one time, and then you’re cured – and that’s that (over and done!)

Listen, if somebody showed you how to cure diabetes… they wouldn’t make very much money off of you. Right? But if somebody invents a pill or a shot that helps you live with diabetes… they’ll get your money week-after-week, month-after-month, year-after-year until the day you die. Make sense?

In fact, there’s a saying in the drug industry:
Cures Kill Profits!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to depend on some big drug company to keep me alive and comfortable just so I can give them more of my hard-earned money every month.
I’d much rather take control of my own health and find a way to banish diabetes.

Now a number of doctors, medical scientists and researchers armed with “real answers” and “real solutions” are stepping up and are NOT afraid of “Uncle Big-Bully Brother!”
One courageous fellow by the name of Matt Traverso is doing exactly this!

Not only that, but Matt Traverso has lectured and personally helped individuals beat the disease to the point that proven sufferers have actually gotten re-diagnoses as “no longer having the disease at all!” (Something that’s pretty much always been ruled out as a possibility altogether! – and now which may even be against the law!)

But why don’t we hear about this information from the American Diabetes Association? The truth is, the American Diabetes Association are benefiting hugely from the current trend in diabetes. They are funded by pharmaceutical companies who would lose out if people reversed there diabetic conditions.

The treatment of Diabetes brings in over $10 Million Dollars EVERY SINGLE HOUR of the day to Doctors, Pharmaceutical companies, and testing supply businesses. With that kind of money at stake Big Pharma is going to extreme lengths to silence information about natural cures and alternatives for treating diabetes.

Therefore it’s not certain how long Matt will be allowed to do this because “Uncle Sambo” has actually started using “Gestapo” tactics whereby people and businesses truly offering “cures” have been raided with masked armed police who even go to the point of forcing customers in the stores to get down on the floor at gunpoint!

So, if you’re wise and want to find out about this while it’s still possible for you to do so, then just visit this link now:

But don’t be surprised if one day soon you return to find this site completely removed with a US Flag waving in its place (in the name of “freedom” no less!)

Top 5 Natural Ways To Reduce Your Blood Pressure

>> Wednesday, December 3, 2008

1. Try Yoga: Yoga is a great way to reduce stress, which contributes to hypertension. But there are some poses in particular recommended for those wanting to improve their cardiac health. These include:

* forward bends like virasana and upavista konasana, which are both sitting postures.
* horizontal asanas which allow the heart beat to slow down when they are practised slowly and rhythmically
* asanas like uttanasana and adhomukha savasana

2. Regular exercise: It doesn't have to be yoga. Any regular exercise like walking, biking or gardening is great for lowering blood pressure. Your physician will be able to give you an exercise plan that suits your heart condition and physical fitness levels. It's important not to overdo it too quickly. Tai chi is actually an excellent way to reduce hypertension. Like yoga, it is relaxing, rhythmical, a stress reducer, and has great benefit on the nervous and parasympathetic systems within the body.

Having a regular exercise program may even reduce your need for blood pressure medication.

3. Eat more bananas! Bananas are high in potassium, which is great for reducing hypertension. Other dietary improvements include eating more fruit and vegetables generally. Studies have found 8 servings of fruit and vegetables daily to be preferable, with these having a particular benefit for cardiovascular health:

* Lettuce
* spinach
* cauliflower
* cabbage
* broccoli
* swiss chard
* citrus fruits

And when these changes are combined with exercise, there are more significant improvements in blood pressure.

4. Make sure you get your folic acid: A study by the Harvard Medical School looked at the benefits of folic acid on blood pressure, and found it to be highly beneficial, particularly amongst younger women. It seemed to have a protective effect against hypertension. Younger women who took at least 1mg of folic acid a day lowered their risk of hypertension by 46%. Older women who had reasonable amounts of folic acid daily lowered their risk by 18%. The study was conducted on 156,000 nurses, 19,720 of whom had high blood pressure.

5. Blessed chocolate: Dark chocolate, and foods and supplements that had high levels of cocoa including chocolate confectionary, cocoa sandwich filling and drinks, have been found to be associated with a lower blood pressure and reduced risk of dying from any cause in a small study conducted on 470 elderly men (they were on average 72 7ears old). The study followed them for 15 years, and those that ate more than 2.3 grams of cocoa a day had lower blood pressure than those that didn't. Researchers believe it is the flavanol component of cocoa that provides this beneficial effect.

Before thinking this is a green light to eat lots of chocolate, you'll need about 100 grams of dark chocolate a day to get the blood pressure benefits. That equates to an extra 500 calories per 100 grams, with an average fat content of 30%. Raw cocoa is not well taken by people when it is eaten in large amounts. The calorie and fat considerations need to be taken into account, although there are some chocolate bars out there that have a higher flavanol content.

natural cures for high blood pressure -Natural ways to lower blood pressure

>> Monday, December 1, 2008

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the leading predictors of an early death for the western population. A person with a higher than average blood pressure will be at increased risk of an early death from stroke heart failure or a heart attack. If you have high blood pressure in addition to other conditions such as diabetes then the outlook is even worse.

Hypertension is a silent disease; people with high blood pressure usually don't feel any different from any one else. We often see some one going red in the face with effort or from stress and say that their blood pressure is up, but it can be raised without any outward symptoms. The lack of overt symptoms of high blood pressure is why the doctor should check your blood pressure at every visit.

High blood pressure is defined most widely now as anything over 140/ 80. In practice it is the lower number that matters, the baseline pressure your blood vessels are always experiencing. This number is ideally seventy, it is considered high at eighty, with lifestyle choices are usually addressed at this point, and treatment is more aggressive once the bottom number reaches ninety.

Taking some lifestyle measures and using some natural treatments can very often avoid drug treatment.

STOP SMOKING

Yes, smoking is blamed for all ills in our modern age, and most smokers will be able to tell you about one relative or another who lived to 103 and smoked every day since they were twelve years old. A simple test can show what smoking does to blood pressure. Take your blood pressure, or that of the smoker, before a cigarette and record the result. Now have a cigarette, or allow them to and recheck the blood pressure. It will have risen considerably. Stopping smoking is one of the greatest gifts you can give your health.

EXERCISE

Just thirty minutes of activity three times a week has been shown to reduce blood pressure. This does not need to be heart pumping, sweat inducing, lung bursting activity. A simple walk will suffice. The walk should be brisk enough to be a slight effort. Simply increasing what is called incidental activity counts as well. This involves getting off the bus a stop early, or off the lift a floor early, or just parking a little further from the entrance to the mall.

LOSE WEIGHT

If you are overweight dropping ten percent of your present weight will reduce your blood pressure. This does not mean become a model size ten or less. It means drop ten percent of your present weight, so if you are two hundred pounds and lose twenty then you may still be considered overweight, but you will have dropped your blood pressure.
